Another great
flashback article of how something was created and the thought process behind
it. It made me appreciate the Internet much more. This was written the year I
was born and it's amazing to see how the Internet/world wide web has evolved. I
remember in grade school having computer class and it had nothing to do with
the Internet until 7th and 8th grades. I do believe that we all, especially the
younger generations, take it all for granted. It's fascinating to see their
predictions of the world wide web for the future. It is also a great article
that shows detailed step by step explanation of how it works from a technical
perspective of the backside of it all. When the article first spoke about URIs
I thought they misspelled it because all I know is URLs. So I researched it and
found they are a bit different but URL is also used to talk about URIs. The
last thing I would like to mention is this quote, ""For example, the
common URI syntax reserves the '/' as a way of representing a hierarchical space,
and '?' as a separator between the address of an object and a query operation
applied to it," (793). I finally know what they mean when I click or type
in a link or web address!
Hi Jinxx21,
ReplyDeleteYa, it's funny to have been working in tech at that time and being in the middle of it all. I remember being shown the web for the first time; one of the first sites I was shown was the site for the Louvre in France. There were images of paintings and it was a wonder (it's a much nicer site now). I saw a site that showed how an atom bomb was composed. There was a site of some guys that worked for SGI who used liquid oxygen (LOX) to light a grill (needless to say, the grill did not survive). Anyway, I have fond memories. I like what we can do now with the web, I just think that now so much is web based, so much more is at risk.
Anyway, a nice write up!
Jinxx21,
ReplyDeleteThis article also took my back to junior high when my computer teacher was first describing the internet. That's funny that it also took you down memory lane. With a lot of the articles that we have read, the author's predictions usually came true. I have been amazed how spot on some of these people were. This article also helped explain to me some of the history and different internet concepts. It's funny that I'm an avid computer user and didn’t have a clue what some of the URI's or even what HTTP meant. I think you did a great job on your post.
Hey Jinxx21!
ReplyDeleteThis article was interesting to read, like a flashback to when all these technologies were still up and coming. I definitely appreciate the internet a lot more...AND I feel like I know much more about it. I never thought about what HTTP or URL or HTML was. I always overlooked it as some sort of code for something. But in actuality, it's not that difficult to comprehend. In regards to the newer generations that had internet since birth (high speed and wireless internet) will definitely take it for granted. I was also very impressed in the accuracy of the authors predictions. It seems like all these article we read about knew something most people didnt and most of the time, its exactly what they predict....weird.
