6/25-7/1 Post 3: Community Media

In the article, Community Media,” the author goes into detail about what community media is, and where it is headed. I found this article to be very interesting once I had a better concept of what it was about. I had to come back to this article because I had no clue what it was about at first. There were a couple of points that struck me. The first is the quote, “Don’t hate the media, make the media,” (3). I wish that society believed this and followed through with this motto. People could stop caring about what others think of them and their views and focus on furthering their selves as individuals and politically. The second thing that intrigued me was the quote, ”It is not about having a gripe with the establishment necessarily, but it is about asserting difference – either from other aspects of the media or just in general.” If people knew how to debate or take constructive criticism, society would be able to have open discussions about anything and everything. Unfortunately people are afraid to disagree. Lastly, the quote, “Whatever I say, whatever I do, I can’t influence the government,” (8) definitely tugged at me. What most of society doesn’t realize, which makes me sad, is that they don’t realize they run this country and that the government simply is just there to represent them. Meaning, they have much more power than they allow themselves to have.

I really like the quote you referenced, "Dont hate the media, make the media". I think this is a great mindset to have, and is more relevant now than ever. With the rise of social networking sites such as twitter, facebook etc. creating our own news and media outlets is more accessible than ever. With the ability to create our own blogs and so forth, we can create any media we want. Gone are the days when there were only a couple ways to access the news and other sources of media, today we can find any media we want at the touch of a button. However, with the expanded access to create media, we must be careful what we choose to view because an influx of scams and other garbage is in abundance.

  2. Hello Jinxx21,
I enjoyed reading your post about the article Community Media. I liked the way you picked different quotes that you like from the article. I agree with what you said about the first quote "don't hate the media make the media". That is very true that people should focus on themselves and bettering themselves then thinking about what everybody else has to say about them or about different things going on in society.

  3. Hi Jinxx21,
The political apathy that you mentioned in the readings struck a chord with me too. I was very surprised at the numbers: 30% in the 1970s thinking that their voices would not matter, and then 80% over the last 10 years? Wow. I wonder how it has come to this. However, I do have to admit that sometimes I am not so good with upholding my own civic duties, but I did not realize that so many people felt they had so little power. Community media does seem like it could be part of the solution to this apathy; the author makes some very good arguments. Funny though, maybe I just did not "get" everything in the article, but I with the author delved more into just what community media is, or more examples of it in action.
